16th May 2012 / Appearances / Coldest City / On Sale
Today sees the release of my new spy thriller THE COLDEST CITY, the first in what I hope will be a long and enduring series.
If you don’t know what THE COLDEST CITY is (and therefore I have to assume you’ve stumbled across this site from a link somewhere else), just follow the links; here for the book’s promotional website, here for an overview on this site, and here for an interview with me talking about the book.
You should also watch the trailer:
If you haven’t already ordered a copy, follow the information and links on the official website. If you’re in the UK, note that we also have limited signed bookplate editions available exclusively from Travelling Man and Page 45.
And then, this weekend, we kick off the ALL THE COLDEST CITIES tour — starting with a series of dates at Travelling Man’s stores across the north of England.
Each signing will last 1-2 hrs, starting at the times below:
(To answer a FAQ: yes, I’m very happy to sign any other books you want to bring along, and indeed any body parts you want immortalised.)
I’ll also be appearing at the Bookshop in Colne and doing a stock signing at London’s GOSH next week, but I’ll post more about those while recovering from this weekend…!
8th May 2012 / Daredevil / On Sale / Wasteland
Issue #37 of WASTELAND goes on sale this week.
This is the penultimate issue of the “Under The God” story arc, as Abi tries to get herself, Michael and Gerr out of Godsholm safely, while Brother Zakk tries to bring peace and stability to the divided town. Oh, and Gerr finds himself on the wrong end of Abi’s temper…
Here’s the issue solicit:
Cornered and desperate, there’s no way out for Michael and Gerr — until Abi reveals her shocking escape plan. But as one crisis ends another begins, and now the citizens of Godsholm face a dilemma as Brother Zakk faces up to his faith… and his duty. Will the young acolyte crack under the pressure? Or can he bring unity to the fractured pilgrims?
The order code is MAR121145, available from all good comic stores and digitally through Comixology.
First, it was Marvel’s best-selling graphic novel for April (and #19 overall).
And as if that wasn’t enough, it also made the New York Times bestseller list.
Thanks to everyone who supported the book. Nice to go out on a high note.
1st May 2012 / Appearances / Coldest City / Interviews / Pre-order
Just two weeks to go now until the release of THE COLDEST CITY. To celebrate, and help spread the word to a few people who might not hang out here or on twitter, we’ve made a book trailer.
Click here to view it, Like it, and tell all your friends.
[UPDATE: Perfectly timed, you can also now read an extensive interview about the book over at Comic Book Resources.]
On a related note, I’m delighted to announce that our special guests for the ALL THE COLDEST CITIES tour are now confirmed, and it’s a great line-up:
It’s going to be a great set of dates. Hope to see you there.
20th April 2012 / Appearances
THE COLDEST CITY, my new Cold War spy thriller, will hit shelves in a month’s time on May 16.
If like me you live in the north of England (or fancy a road trip) you’re in luck; I’ve teamed up with Travelling Man, the rather excellent chain of comic stores — and one of the only places you can pre-order a limited signed bookplate edition of THE COLDEST CITY — for a promotional tour. That’s the poster on the right; click for a larger version.
Besides pre-ordering from Travelling Man or the also-excellent Page 45 in Nottingham, these dates will be your best chance to grab one of the bookplate editions and get the whole caboodle signed. Perhaps your only chance, if we sell out over the course of the tour. Which looks pretty darn likely.
For a bit of fun, each date will also feature a “support act” — someone local to the area, whose work I like. We’re rounding up the guests in question right now, and I’ll confirm who they are once we have everything in place.
All the signings are at Travelling Man stores, natch. Locations for each city are here, and these are the dates and times:
And if you live really locally, your luck is even better; I’m also appearing at The Bookshop in Colne, on Thursday May 24 @ 7.30pm. This is a much more community-focused event where I’ll be talking about graphic novels and answering questions, in addition to signing the book. There may even be tea and cake, so, awesome.
I have a feeling this may be the first ever graphic novel-centred event in Pendle — which perhaps explains why the store have asked me to point out that entry is free, but space is limited, so if you want to come along please book ahead. You can do so in person at the shop, or give them a call — see here for contact details.
I’m really looking forward to these dates, it’s going to be fun. Hope to see you there.
16th April 2012 / Interviews
I was recently contacted by Daniel Bogan, creator of The Setup, who wanted to feature me on the site.
Those who know me could probably guess that I’ve loved The Setup since it started, and it’s already featured some amazing people, from William Gibson to Gabe Newell to Charles Stross to John Gruber and many, many more. So after doing a little geek dance around my study, I of course said yes.
And now, it’s live. Go! And be thrilled by tales of wired keyboards, minimalist apps, and depressing desks.
9th April 2012 / Daredevil / On Sale / Wasteland
WASTELAND #36 goes on sale this week.
This issue, ‘Devil’s Dance’, continues the new story arc “Under The God”, and after the torture (ahem) of last issue’s revelations, this issue is all about fallout, violence and repercussions. Just another day for Michael and Abi, then.
Here’s the issue solicit:
Michael and Gerr are found — and all hell breaks loose in God’s house! But the truth still lies undiscovered, and while Father Affon, Zakk, and even Rikerd struggle to make sense of it all, Michael, Abi and Gerr must come up with a plan to escape the town… before they’re executed as devils! Don’t miss this action-packed issue!
The order code is FEB121114, available from all good comic stores and digitally through Comixology. [UPDATE: You can now read a four-page preview at Comic Book Resources.]
Also hitting shelves this Wednesday is DAREDEVIL SEASON ONE.
The SEASON ONE line is designed to re-tell the original stories of these heroes from the ’60s, but in a contemporary style to appeal to new readers (and existing readers who’ve never read those old comics). MTV Geek did a fairly extensive interview with artist Wellinton Alves and myself about how we approached the book and what you can expect to see, which explains things quite well.
DAREDEVIL SEASON ONE is in Marvel’s Premier Hardcover oversized format. Digital readers will be pleased to know that it’s being released day-and-date, and each hardcopy purchase comes with a free download code for a digital copy.
Meet Matt Murdock, one of New York’s finest attorneys by day and swashbuckling crime-fighter Daredevil by night! Discover the dark secrets behind his first days in the costume, as the man without sight became the man without fear — and one of the greatest heroes in comic history. Daredevil faces off against the Owl, Purple Man and Mr. Fear for the first time… but it’s not what you remember! You only think you know the story!
The comic store order code is JAN120730, and the ISBN for bookstores is 978-0785156437. You can read a six-page preview at The Other Murdock Papers.
Finally, I want to apologise for not posting here as often as I’d like. As I mentioned in my 2011 round-up I simply can’t talk about most of what I’m writing these days until I get the nod from publishers, much as I want to! Suffice to say I’m working on several graphic novels (including the next COLDEST CITY book, which I’ve mentioned before), more videogames, and some prose fiction, so it’s busy as ever.
The one thing I can say is that DAREDEVIL SEASON ONE is my last foray into superheroes for the time being. Everything I’m currently writing is focused on the “real mainstream” — sci-fi, thriller, espionage, horror, fantasy — so really it’s just business as usual, but without the occasional capes. I can’t wait to tell you all about them.
20th March 2012 / Appearances / Videogames / Wasteland
If you’re a digital reader, you should head over right now to Comixology, where they’re having a huge WASTELAND half-price sale — all issues are $0.99 each, or you can buy a huge “omnibus” edition of the entire series so far for $19.99. That’s less than the price of three paperback collections. Madness!
(I’m also recording an appearance on the Comixology podcast tonight, for Wednesday’s edition.) [UPDATE: That podcast is now live.]
If you’re a PC gamer, you should head over right now to Eurogamer (or any other game news site, to be honest) where they’re announcing that a PC version of BINARY DOMAIN is due for release, both boxed and download. Not only does this indicate how well the game has been received, but it also shows that Sega are willing to support a brand new IP, which is always encouraging. Do show them you appreciate it when the time comes.
12th March 2012 / On Sale / Wasteland
Issue #35 of WASTELAND goes on sale this week.
This issue continues the new story arc, “Under The God”, revealing just what happened to Michael and Gerr after the end of last issue, and why it really isn’t a good idea to try and hold Abi captive…
Here’s the issue solicit:
Michael and Gerr have disappeared, and Abi is held at the mercy of Godsholm’s Templars while Rikerd’s men scour the town for the missing blasphemers. But Abi isn’t so helpless as they think, and while Michael and Gerr get some ‘quiet time’, she makes a discovery that will radically change her outlook — and even threaten their journey to A-Ree-Yass-I!
The order code is JAN121218, available from all good comic stores and digitally through Comixology. (Incidentally, Comixology are now only missing issues #31-32. By next month the entire series will be available, right up to the present issue.)
[UPDATE: All issues are now available.]
You can also read a five-page preview at Comic Book Resources.
24th February 2012 / On Sale / Videogames
BINARY DOMAIN, the new squad-based sci-fi shooter from Sega, is now on sale (in UK & Europe; next week for the USA). [UPDATE: Now on sale everywhere.]
Binary Domain was developed by Yakuza Studio, the Sega team led by Toshihiro Nagoshi who, as you might guess, are also responsible for the enormously successful YAKUZA game series.
But they wanted BD to feel like a Western-produced game, so in early 2010 I flew out to Tokyo to meet and consult with Nagoshi-san and the team. A (very) rough story was already written; my job was to re-write it, and the game script, in a Western style.
This was entirely new territory, both for myself and Sega, and the culture clash between Japan and the Anglophone world reared its head more than a few times. It was hard work, with the entire script going through many revisions, including wholesale alterations to the game story. And that’s before we even got to the squad command system, which was so large I had to enlist the help of Sidelines stablemates Matthew Gibbs, Tom Jubert and James Leach.
But the end result was worth it. BINARY DOMAIN is a unique product, created by a unique process, using a unique talent pool. There’s nothing else quite like it out there, and that pleases me.
15th February 2012 / On Sale / Wasteland
Issue #34 of WASTELAND goes on sale today.
This issue continues the new story arc, “Under The God”, and reveals what happened when the mysterious ‘branded man’ visited Godsholm. Plus, the Crusaders are out for blood…
Here’s the issue solicit:
After Brother Zakk’s shocking revelation, Michael, Abi and Gerr must pick through the mysteries and half-memories to determine the truth. Who is the mysterious branded man? What does he want? Where is he going? And can they convince the townsfolk of Godsholm that they’re not Satan’s minions? Not if the priest, Father Affon, has anything to do with it…
The order code is DEC111154, and it’s available from all good comic stores. (There doesn’t appear to be a preview anywhere online at time of writing, but if one turns up later today I’ll add it here.)
This is also a good time to remind digital readers that WASTELAND is available through Comixology — every new issue is now day-and-date, and we’re currently up to #22 on the back issues, with more being added all the time. Within a couple of issues’ time the entire series so far should be available.
